Khentii Terelj trekking

Detailed Trek Description

The Khentii Mountains are a mountain range in the Tv and Khentii Provinces in northern Mongolia. The chain overlaps the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area and includes Mongolia's sacred mountain, Burkhan Khaldun, which is associated with the origin of Genghis Khan.

The range forms the watershed between the Arctic Ocean (via Lake Baikal) and the Pacific Ocean basins. Rivers originating in the range include the Onon, Kherlen, and Tuul.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Upon arrival at the airport we will be welcomed by your guide. He will bring us to your comfortable, centrally located hotel.

In the afternoon we will stroll around Ulaanbaatar. We will visit the Natural and the Historical Museums.

We will stop at the Gandantegchinlen Monastery. It is the largest and most important monastery of Mongolia. We will scroll through the different monasteries and see the magnificent statue of Migjid Janraisig, an 82-food high statue gilded in gold and covered with silk cloths.

DAY 2: KHENTII NATIONAL PARK

In the morning we will head east of UB, reaching Khentii National Park after a 3-hour drive, where the landscape consists of green, forested hillsides, and spectacular granite cliffs. Many nomads live in this area, and you can see yaks, sheep, goats and horses grazing in this peaceful valley. After lunch, we will hike through lush meadows for a couple of hours towards the Tuul River valley, where we will meet our horsemen. Then, we will have dinner and camp on the Tuul River bank.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 3: TUUL RIVER VALLEY

After breakfast, we will load our gears on our packhorses. You will be impressed at the strength of the small but sturdy Mongolian horses. We will hike into the valley along the base of the mountain ranges. As we leave civilization behind, you will hear and see ever more ground squirrels, marmots and birds. After about five-and-a-half hours of hiking, we will set up camp.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 4: KHONGORYN RIVER

Today as we hike along the Tuul River, you will notice how the landscape changes as we go north and hike through silent pine forests where all you will hear is the occasional animal call. Keep your ears open for the sound of woodpeckers and keep your eyes open for golden eagles, soaring far above us hunting for prey. After four hours of hiking, we will arrive at our camping spot, a green and peaceful place where the Tuul and Khongoryn Rivers meet.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 5: TUUL RIVER

Today we hike still further along the open valley along the Tuul River, surrounded on both sides by high, densely forested mountains. We will camp at the junction of two different valleys on the banks of the Tuul River.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 6 AND 7: BLACK LAKE

Today we leave the Tuul valley and enter an area of tundra, which is the habitat of the moose. You will soon become an expert at ‘moose detection.’ After about two hours of hiking in a typical Siberian landscape, we will climb up the mountain through deep forest where deer, wolves, moose and bears live. Keep your eyes open! At the top of the mountain, we cross the pass and descend to the breathtakingly beautiful Black Lake. We will camp on the yellow sand beach of the lake.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 8: RELAX

Today we will stay camped by the lake and you can swim or fish in the clear water, hike in the forests or go bird and animal watching.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 9: THREE SMALLER LAKES

Today we will visit three smaller lakes. Some of you may wish to climb the surrounding mountains to admire the stunning views. We will camp in this area.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 10: KHONGORYN RIVER

Today we will follow the Khongoryn River downstream for about five hours and camp near a river crossing. The high mountains and the deep valley make this a wonderful day of hiking.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 11: ALTAN OLGII

Today’s hike starts in wide valleys, but after about three hours these give way to large mountain forests of birch, pine and cedar. We will climb up a steep path for about two hours until we come to a high pass close to the Altan Olgii peak. At an elevation of 2646m, Altan Olgii (meaning Golden Cradle) is one of the highest peaks in the Khentii Mountain range. On the other side of the mountain, we will camp near a stream where you can cool off after your strenuous day.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 12: DUND BAYAN VALLEY

Today we return to Terelj through the Dund Bayan valley. Our luggage, food and equipment will be unloaded from our packhorses and we will meet up with our vehicles.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D)

DAY 13: DRIVE BACK TO ULAANBAATAR

We will have a full free day to stroll around in Ulaanbaatar and buy some souvenirs before heading back home.
